What is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the tip of a tooth's root and any surrounding infected tissue. It is usually done when a root canal treatment has failed or when an infection persists despite conventional root canal therapy.

When is Apicoectomy Recommended?

Failed Root Canal

When traditional root canal treatment doesn't resolve the infection

Complex Root Anatomy

When root canals are too narrow or curved for conventional treatment

Persistent Infection

When infection continues despite previous treatment attempts

Tooth Preservation

Alternative to extraction that saves your natural tooth

The Apicoectomy Procedure

Understanding the surgical process and what to expect

1

Pre-Surgical Evaluation

Comprehensive examination and imaging to assess the tooth and surrounding structures.

2

Local Anesthesia

Administration of local anesthesia to ensure complete comfort during the procedure.

3

Surgical Access

A small incision is made in the gum tissue to access the root tip and surrounding area.

4

Infection Removal

Removal of the infected root tip and any surrounding infected tissue.

5

Root Sealing

The root end is sealed with a biocompatible filling material to prevent future infection.

6

Suture Placement

The gum tissue is carefully sutured back in place to promote proper healing.
